Meet mid-day meal beneficiaries of Odisha

As a functioning mid-day meal NGO in Odisha, The Akshaya Patra Foundation is able to feed many dreams of thousands of mid-day meal beneficiaries. The Foundation runs two formats of kitchens to prepare the mid-day meals for these beneficiaries-- centralised and decentralised kitchens.

It runs the centralised kitchen in Puri and the decentralised format in Nayagarh. The cooked mid-day meals from the kitchens are transported to the beneficiary schools in custom-designed vehicles to keep the food fresh till it is served. The feeding programme of this NGO in Orissa began in June 2006 and currently it feeds 80, 415 mid-day meal beneficiaries in 1000 Government schools.

The Government of Puri appoints few individuals at the beginning of each academic year to identify school drop-outs and bring them back to school. They also create awareness about the significance of education in the community. Here is an anecdote on Tanku Behra and Sankar Behra who were brought back to school. Aged 11 and 13 respectively, the brothers duo were found doing menial jobs.

They were then brought to a Primary School in Bhudan Nagar. This school is also one of the feeding schools of this NGO in Odisha. However as the brothers were not even well versed with the basics of reading and writing they were enrolled in Standard I. Soon they caught up with their studies and are in Standard III now. Even though Tanku is a polio victim, he is independent and handles day-to-day activities without any help.

According to their teacher Prabhamani, both the brothers have shown considerable improvements overall. Their health too has improved considerably. She says they eagerly wait for Akshaya Patra mid-day meals.

The mid-day meals provided by this NGO in Odisha further motivate them to come to school every day.

The beneficiaries of Akshaya Patra mid-day meal in Puri counter the general perception of a remote region. More often than not, remote places are perceived as ‘not so civilised’ and backward areas. Such places are also thought to have less literate crowd who are aware of the rapidly changing society. But, this 8-year-old child from Brahmanpada Project Upper Primary School, Satyabadi— a village about 25 kms from Puri, defies the general impression.

Runiguru, studying in Standard III is a highly disciplined child. She is also one of the beneficiaries of Akshaya Patra mid-day meal. Even though her school is located in an extremely remote area, the children of this school are as disciplines as those of private schools. This proves that education is a possibility in remote locations too and that it just requires determination and planning to reach the generations at the grass root level. Akshaya Patra, an operational NGO in Puri provides mid-day meal to this school and feels contented to be able to reach to this school through the narrow roads. Logistically, on this route there are no other school where this NGO in Puri has to deliver mid-day meal, yet the NGO is determined to feed these children in Puri.

Talking specifically about Runiguru, all her four siblings too are beneficiaries of Akshaya Patra mid-day meal. Her English teacher Rabinarayan Mohanty says, due to lack of nutritious food, Runiguru seemed malnourished when she joined school but after having the wholesome mid-day meal provided by Akshaya Patra, she is far more healthy now. He goes on to add that the mid-day meals are like a boon to these children and their parents too. These children hail from economically backward families and the families are unable to meet even the basic necessities, leave alone a nutritious meal.

Runiguru’s aspiration is a testimony of your donations for children in Puri. A tender age, no doubt, but she says, “I want to serve needy people” when asked about her ambition. Her aspiration is well comprehended and thus she was very clear when she uttered it. Literature is her favourite subject. She is very fond of paneer (cottage cheese) that is served in the mid-day meal.

There are many children like Runiguru, who despite residing in remote areas knows the value of education and food. Your donation for children like Runiguru sure will help in benefitting them in more than one way.  Your donation for children will help this NGO in Puri to further their reach in providing mid-day meals to many more talented and determined children in Puri. Donate today and make a difference by providing one wholesome meal to these children. To know more about the Foundation visit, www.akshayapatra.org. The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a NGO in Bangalore implements the mid-day meal programme in Karnataka and eight other states of India. The impact of mid-day meal is seen across all the beneficiaries in more than 10,000 Government schools. The testimonies of teachers and parents reveal the ground impact of this programme. Here is one such testimony from a Senior Teacher of Government High School in Hesarghatta, Bangalore, Karnataka.

Babita, a Senior Teacher has been working with the school for past eight years and has witnessed the difference one wholesome meal makes to the children. She says, "About 80% of the children in her school miss the most important meal of the day i.e. breakfast.” This means to say this large group of children comes to school empty stomach. She goes on to add, “Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal programme in Karnataka has brought about a significant change in the lives of all the students.

The parents of these children work as helpers in Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR). So they leave their homes early in the morning and come back only in the evening. This leaves them with no time to prepare breakfast or lunch. Hence, the mid-day meal becomes the first meal of the day for these children. Prior to Akshaya Patra serving mid-day meal the children used to mostly get stale food. But since 2007 when this NGO in Bangalore started serving mid-day meal the children get to eat freshly cooked nutritious meal every day. The impact of the mid-day meal is seen in their improved concentration level during class hours too.”

According to the teachers of this school, there are many gifted children in each class who are sharp determined about their future. They pose as examples for other students and motivate them to study better. The mid-day meal provided by this NGO in Bangalore is a significant intervention in shaping up the future of these young aspirants.

There are many more such inspirational testimonies by teachers, parents and children too. Read more about the beneficiaries and the impact of the mid-day meal at  Akshaya Patra. Choose to donate for children charity in Bangalore and witness the difference you are making meal by meal.
